Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome. If you are new to tallow, you may have questions about what it is and how to use it, whether as a simple tallow balm or part of a layered routine, including whipped tallow textures.

Summary

  • Sourcing and quality. Ever Tallow renders 100% grass-fed beef suet into pure tallow in-house, from local Waikato farmers, for purity, quality, and sustainable upcycling.
  • Skin compatibility. Tallow closely resembles human sebum and naturally contains fatty acids and vitamins A, D, E, and K. It is deeply moisturizing, barrier-supportive, and comfortable on dry or sensitive skin.
  • Scent and certification. It may have a mild buttery scent because we do not over-render it, which preserves nutrients. Products are not halal-certified.
  • How to use. Apply a pea-sized amount to clean, slightly damp skin, warm and massage in, use daily as needed, and layer under sunscreen once absorbed.
  • Product options. Choose unscented for sensitive skin or essential-oil scented, in whipped or traditional textures.

What is tallow, and what tallow do you use at Ever Tallow?

Tallow is purified animal fat that has been rendered, melted down and purified, for use in skincare. Ever Tallow uses 100% grass-fed beef suet, rendered into tallow. We render the suet as it comes to us from our local farmers, which gives us full control over the quality and purity of the final product. We make sure it comes from high-quality, grass-fed cattle and is properly handled, and we inspect the fat for cleanliness and freshness before rendering, avoiding unnecessary additives or processing.

Why is tallow good for skin?

Tallow is one of the most natural moisturizers available. Its composition closely mirrors human sebum, the skin's natural oil, so it is deeply nourishing and easily absorbed. This compatibility helps hydrate the skin, support the skin barrier, and lock in moisture, especially in harsh or dry conditions.

It naturally contains fatty acids and fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K, associated with a healthy-looking complexion and a soft, comfortable feel. Used for centuries by past generations, tallow is a time-tested skincare ingredient. Unlike many modern products filled with synthetic additives, tallow balms are made with minimal, natural ingredients, a simple, eco-conscious option. Ever Tallow products are cosmetic moisturizers, not medicines, and are not intended to treat or cure any skin condition.

How do you make your tallow?

Of course, we do not gatekeep.

The rendering process

  • The best fat for tallow comes from around the kidneys and heart of cattle.
  • The fat is chopped into small pieces and gently heated over the course of a week to melt and separate the pure, usable fat from any meat or impurities.
  • Once the liquid fat is separated from the solids, it is strained and cooled.

Texture

  • When warm, tallow is liquid like oil.
  • At room temperature, it becomes solid and creamy.

Historical and other uses

Historically, tallow was used for candles, soaps, and skincare, and it is still popular today for those who prefer natural, sustainable products. Since it is heat-stable, it is also used in cooking.

Where do you source your tallow?

Our tallow comes from local farmers with 100% grass-fed dry stock here in the Waikato, New Zealand. We do not source cattle raised just for tallow. It is a by-product of livestock farming, so rather than let good ingredients go to waste, we work with farms and local butchers to set aside the suet for our skincare. We are passionate about upcycling, using the whole animal rather than seeing it discarded. By choosing a biodegradable ingredient like tallow, you reduce your reliance on heavily processed, industrial ingredients.

Is your tallow halal?

Our tallow is not halal. While our ingredients are thoughtfully sourced, our products are not halal-certified. We understand everyone has unique values and preferences, and we are committed to being transparent so you can make the best choice for your needs.

Does it smell?

Our tallow can have a mild buttery scent. This relates to rendering. The more times you render the fat to remove scent, the more nutrients you reduce. We want our product to retain its full nutritional value, so we do not over-render it.

Where should I start? How do I choose a product?

  • Unscented tallow is best for sensitive skin or anyone who cannot tolerate essential oils. You get the nourishing benefits without the risk of fragrance irritation, which suits a wide range of skin types, including reactive ones.
  • Scented tallow gives lasting hydration and a pleasant aroma. We blend our balms with high-quality essential oils. Whether you prefer calming lavender, frankincense, or brighter floral notes, the moisturizer leaves your skin feeling nourished.
  • Texture. If you like a lighter feel, try a whipped tallow balm. If you prefer something classic, our traditional balm is a great place to begin.

What is the best practice for applying tallow?

  • Start with clean, slightly damp skin. Gently cleanse, then pat dry so skin is clean but a bit dewy. Tallow absorbs best on warm, damp skin.
  • Use a pea-sized amount. A little goes a long way. Scoop out a small dab, about the size of a pea.
  • Warm it up. Rub the dab between your fingertips until it softens, which makes it easier to spread.
  • Gently massage in. Apply to your whole face or just dry patches, using circular motions, focusing on rough or extra-dry spots like elbows or cheeks.
  • Allow it to absorb. Let it sink in for a minute or two. It forms a light protective layer that locks in moisture. Skin should feel comfortably nourished, not oily.
  • Use daily or as needed. Many people love it as a night moisturizer, and as a daytime barrier against dryness.

What do we know about eczema and tallow?

We are a family that knows how hard and ongoing a challenge eczema can be, especially for young children, with many visits to doctors and the hospital, all trying our best to help those we care for. Our health service has its place, and we value its advice. We also wanted to explore other supports to see if they help. We have tried many creams, and some work for a while. What we have learned is that everyone has a different experience, and for now, in our situation, tallow is helpful and is making a difference. Tallow is a cosmetic moisturizer, not a treatment, so for a diagnosed condition, we always recommend following your doctor's advice.

Can I use other skincare products alongside tallow?

Absolutely. We recommend pairing with sunscreen. Apply tallow first to moisturize and nourish the skin, and let it absorb fully. Once it has settled, after a few minutes, apply your sunscreen on top as the final step. Tallow can create a smooth base for even sunscreen application, especially if your skin is dry.
