Velvet Balm is a firm, concentrated tallow balm with a deep black cherry and merlot scent. It is made with 100% grass-fed beef tallow and sweet almond oil, and it suits anyone who wants rich moisture with a warmer, evening-style fragrance rather than a light fruity one.

As a true balm, it is denser than a whipped cream. It melts between warm fingertips, presses into the skin, and forms a soft layer that helps slow moisture loss. If you want a scented tallow balm made in NZ, Velvet Balm pairs a simple three-ingredient formula with a scent made for winding down.

Velvet Balm is one of three new scented balms in the range, each built on the same base and set apart by fragrance alone. Bloom Balm carries a soft raspberry and vanilla scent and Blush Balm a bright strawberry and guava one. Velvet is the deepest of the three, made for people who reach for rich, warm scents at the end of the day.

Why tallow?

Beef tallow sits close to the natural oils in your skin, so it absorbs well and feels comfortable rather than heavy. It naturally contains vitamins A, D, E, and K, which are associated with soft, supple-feeling skin. Because the balm is water-free, it is concentrated, and a small amount goes a long way on dry areas.

Naturally occurring vitamins

Grass-fed tallow naturally contains vitamins A, D, E, and K. These nutrients are associated with soft, supple-feeling skin and a smooth, even-looking surface. They arrive as part of the fat itself rather than as added extracts. That is one reason a three-ingredient balm still gives your skin plenty to draw on, without a long list of additives to read through first.

Key benefits

  • Rich moisture for dry, rough, or weather-exposed skin
  • Supports the skin barrier and helps slow moisture loss
  • A warm, dessert-and-wine style scent suited to evening routines
  • Multi-use on hands, elbows, knees, heels, and dry patches
  • Three ingredients, made in small batches in New Zealand

Key ingredients

100% grass-fed beef tallow

The moisturising base of the balm. Its fatty acid profile sits close to the lipids in healthy skin, so it spreads well once warmed and forms a protective layer over dry areas.

Sweet almond oil

Added for glide and spreadability. It softens the balm so it applies without tugging at dry skin and keeps the finish lighter than tallow alone.

Black cherry merlot fragrance oil

A cosmetic-grade fragrance oil with dark cherry sweetness and a mellow, wine-inspired depth. It is included for scent enjoyment only and fades after application.

Texture, finish, and scent

Velvet Balm is firm in the tin and softens quickly with warmth. The finish is smooth and protective rather than matte. The scent is the richest in our balm range. Where our other scented balms lean bright and tropical, this one is deeper and sweeter, with the black cherry note leading and the merlot note rounding it out. Warm amber and aged oak add depth, while soft vanilla brings a smooth, sweet finish. Patchouli and nutmeg round out the fragrance with warm woody spice.

Who it is for

  • Anyone who prefers a warm, rich scent over a fresh fruity one
  • Dry hands, elbows, knees, and heels that need a concentrated balm
  • Evening and before-bed routines
  • People who want short, recognisable ingredient lists

How to use

Massage a small amount directly onto clean, dry skin. Repeat as often as required. For a more sealed-in feel, apply to slightly damp skin after showering.

  • Evening. Use as the final step on hands, feet, and dry patches before bed.
  • After washing hands. Press a small amount into knuckles and cuticles.
  • Cold weather. Apply to wind-exposed areas like cheeks and the backs of hands.

Where it fits in an evening routine

Velvet Balm is built for the last step of the day, when a richer texture is welcome and the scent matches the wind-down. It layers over lighter products rather than replacing them.

  • Over damp skin. After an evening shower, press the balm onto skin that is still slightly damp. The balm seals that surface moisture in place.
  • As the final seal. If you use a serum or a lighter moisturiser, apply those first, then finish with a thin layer of balm on the driest areas.
  • Overnight hands and heels. Work a small amount into hands before sleep. For cracked-feeling heels, apply a slightly thicker layer and wear socks overnight.
  • Winter evenings. When indoor heating leaves skin feeling tight, a nightly layer on hands, elbows, and shins keeps them feeling comfortable by morning.

Tips for best results

  • Start small. The balm is concentrated. A pea-sized amount covers a full pair of hands once warmed.
  • Warm it first. Melt the amount between your fingertips before applying, so it spreads instead of dragging.
  • Give it a few minutes. Let the balm settle before touching fabrics or bedding.
  • Stay consistent. A thin nightly layer on dry areas works better than an occasional thick one.

Patch testing and sensitive skin

Patch test on the inner arm and wait 24 hours before wider use, as with any new scented product. Avoid broken or irritated skin, and stop use if discomfort occurs.

A note on allergens

Velvet Balm contains sweet almond oil, which is a tree nut. If you have a nut allergy, avoid this product or check with your doctor before using it. It is scented with a fragrance oil, so it is not fragrance-free.

Storage and care

Store with the lid closed, away from direct sunlight and heat. The balm softens in warm rooms and firms up in cooler ones. This is normal and does not change how it works. Use within 12 months of opening.

Ingredients

  • 100% grass fed-finished beef tallow

  • Black cherry merlot fragrance oil

Questions and answers

Question: What does Velvet Balm smell like?

Answer: The scent blends dark cherry sweetness with a mellow, wine-inspired merlot note. It is the deepest scent in our balm range, closer to a dessert fragrance than a fruity one. Warm amber and aged oak add depth, while soft vanilla brings a smooth, sweet finish. Patchouli and nutmeg round out the fragrance with warm woody spice.  It settles down after application, so it suits evening use without lingering strongly.

Question: Is Velvet Balm stronger scented than your other balms?

Answer: The scent is deeper and warmer rather than stronger. Our tropical balms lean bright and fresh, while Velvet Balm leans rich and sweet. All our fragrance oil balms use cosmetic-grade fragrance at a low level, and the scent fades naturally on the skin.

Question: Where should I use Velvet Balm?

Answer: It works best on targeted dry areas. Hands, cuticles, elbows, knees, heels, and dry patches respond well to a firm, concentrated balm. Warm a pea-sized amount between your fingertips, press it in, and give it a few minutes to settle.

Question: Does Velvet Balm suit the face?

Answer: Some people use balms on the face, but every skin is different. Start with a small amount on the driest areas only, and patch test first since it is a scented product. If your skin congests easily, keep it as a spot balm for dry patches.

Question: Is Velvet Balm fragrance-free?

Answer: No. It is scented with a black cherry merlot fragrance oil. If you prefer fragrance-free skincare, our unscented options like Bare Whipped Tallow Cream suit better. The fragrance is there for scent enjoyment only and adds no moisturising function.

Question: What does grass-fed mean for a tallow balm?

Answer: Grass-fed means the tallow comes from cattle raised on pasture. We render ours from 100% grass fed-finished New Zealand beef suet. Tallow quality starts with the animal's diet, so the sourcing is part of the formula, not an afterthought.

Question: Does a tallow balm smell like beef?

Answer: Properly rendered tallow has a faint, neutral scent that most people barely notice. In a scented balm the fragrance oil covers it entirely. In unscented products the natural scent fades within minutes of application.

Question: What is the shelf life of a tallow balm?

Answer: Use within 12 months of opening. Because the balm contains no water, it does not need preservatives to stay stable. Keep the lid closed, store it away from heat and sunlight, and use clean, dry fingers to help it last.

Question: Should I wear a tallow balm under makeup?

Answer: A thin layer works as a rich base on dry patches, but allow several minutes for it to settle first. A full layer under makeup feels heavy for most people. Many prefer a whipped cream in the morning and a balm at night.

Question: How do I patch test a scented skincare product?

Answer: Apply a small amount to the inner forearm and wait 24 hours. If no redness or discomfort appears, use it on a wider area. Patch testing matters most with fragranced products, since fragrance is a common trigger for reactive skin.

Summary

Velvet Balm is a concentrated three-ingredient tallow balm made with 100% grass-fed beef tallow, sweet almond oil, and a black cherry merlot fragrance oil. The firm, water-free texture forms a protective layer that helps slow moisture loss on hands, feet, elbows, and dry patches, with a warm scent suited to evening routines. It contains sweet almond oil, a tree nut, and a fragrance oil, so patch test first and avoid it if you have a nut allergy.
